The night was still young when the hooded figure shambled into the clearing. In one hand, an amorphous lump dangled down to the waist of the shrouded figure. Shadowy forms, an audience of them, hung just outside the clearing. They blended in with the trees and the shrubs with the ease of familiarity. As the figure advanced, the garments trailed on the ground, a ground swept free of debris. With the wave of a hand, the figure signaled to two memebers of the audience. The brought forth a smooth, flat, round stone. After carefully, reverently, placing the stone in the center of the clearing, they fled into the shadow, from whence they came. The cloaked figure deposited the shape on the ground and, having dropped to a kneeling posistion, pinned with one knee. From an inner fold of the cloak, the figure brought out a stake, and a somewhat long piece of rope. The crude, raw-hide, rope was tied to one appendage of the amorphous shape, which know began to struggle and make some rustling noises. The figure withdrew a short, cruel-looking, knife from the shroud and traced the upturned tip along the underside of the formerly, amorphous shape, which had been staked to the ground, next the stone. With a sudden twist of the knife, the chicken was decapitated! Even without it's head, the bird stumbled and flew in wild circles! The cloaked figure had already receeded to the edge of the clearing. Eventually the chicken dropped dead. The hoodedd figure held out both arms, calling for silence, and stillness. Long hours passed and still, no one moved. Slowly, deliberately, the moon rose up over the trees. Still, they waited. As the moon reached its height, far up in sky over their heads, the figure's arms dropped. In a flash, the clearing was lit by a spectral glow! The moon, having reached its apex, sent a shaft of silvery light down towards the stone. Upon reaching the stone, that same silvery light flowed out from the stone, through the spilled blood of the sacrifice, and cast its glow, muted with gray, into the clearing. It took several long moments for the outer splashes of blood to be illuminated. Once they were, the entire clearing was sent back into darkness. The seeing was completed. Without a word, the audience followed the figure into the gloom of the forest.

Rugin of Rolling Hills silently crept into an empty clearing. Blood was everywhere, but most was dry. There was one spot near the center that had what appeared to be chicken splattered all around it. The Ranger crouched down and let his senses fill the forest, expanding outward to their limit. Werewolf. That was the last creature here. But before that... Indeterminate. The moon was low, and getting lower still. Rugin got to his feet and ran for the Warrior's Guild. The Paladins would know if the blood meant a dark ritual had been performed.

Deep in the woods, far away from the Palace, the Cultists gathered. They frollicked about their Temple and played with all their charmed creatures. Then, they all fell silent and gathered around the central, raised dais. Moonwalker Stag stood above her tribe. With slow, measured movements, she descended to the ground and walked among her people. She wore a little more than the males of the tribe. Her light, translucent robes hung down from her shoulders, silently swaying in time to her steps. The mask she wore, like the moon she walked, was prettiest at half. Graceful and thin, the pale wood shielded the left, and exposed the right. She spoke softly, but with a passion that pierced the night. Her words made clear to all, what she had seen in the forest clearing earlier that night. Her rapt audience did not move, even the charmed animals respected the Elder Shaman. Moonwalker Stag was fluent in the words of her lupine brothers. Her voice was soft as silk, flowing like a cold stream off an icy mountain. As dawn broke over the trees and shone upon the Temple to Fervus, a sudden quiet descended upon the forest. The usual, cheery, chatter of the Cultists was not heard. There was no morning offering to Fervus. The Temple had been abandonded. Fervus was on the move.

Rugin fled into the forest, disgusted with what had happened just minutes ago. His long, tireless stride carried him away from the crazed Paladins, and each footstep eased his anger. The Guildmaster, Diona, drove off Rugin off, and dismissed his claims of "Mysterious rituals" as nothing but the worries of a Ranger. He turned towards his next option. If the Paladins would not investigate the forest clearing then the Priestesses of Krypta would. Rugin made for the town of Verdale. Verdale was a frontier outpost that had turned to necromancy to fend off the encroaching monsters. It probably wasn't the nearest town, but the Paladins loathed the place. It would be good place.

Sister Darkfiend sat and pretended to listen to the Ranger. She had already forgotten his name. An half hour ago he requested an audience with the guildmaster. Sister Darkfiend was sent as a representative. She heard a few words, "Blood" "Forest Clearing" "North East of here", and immediately tuned the man out. His voice anyway. So she sat and stared into his face, noting certain things, admirirng his eyes. Sister Darkfiend noticed the room had fallen silent.
"You have nothing to worry about", was all she said.
Rugin eagerly responded, "Then you know what happened?"
"Cultists used to live in that part of the woods, you probably walked in on one of their meeting places"
"But the blood..."
"You mentioned a chicken earlier, didn't you?"
Rugin slowly answered, "Yes"
"The Cultists must have sacrificed the bird to their deity, Fervus."
"Are you sure that's all that happened?"
Sister Bloodcrow had silently stalked upon behind Rugin and now answered, with impatience," You have wasted enough of our time, Sir Rugin! Begone! What the Cultistss do is their business alone. If it bothers you so greatly, ask them about it."
Rugin replied, "The Cultists weren't there, so I thought whatever was behind the ritual at the clearing chased them off."
"Did you any animals last night?", Sister Bloodcrow asked angrily.
"Very few," admitted Rugin.
"If something chased off the Cultists every animal in the forest would know about.", Sister Bloodcrow seemed smug that she knew something about the Wilds that the Ranger didn't.
"Thank you for time, if you'll excuse me, I must see the Headranger," Rugin said as he got up and headed for the door.
Sister Darkfiend called to him as he passed through the heavy gates surrounding the Temple to Krypta, "Goodluck on your search!"
Sister Bloodcrow then cruely said,"I detect no sarcasm in your voice, do you truly wish the stranger goodluck? How strange, you younger Sisters really aren't cut out for this place."
"My apologies Sister Bloodcrow.", Sister Darkfiend bowed her head in submission, and promised herself that she would see the Ranger again.

Dancing Flower, Face of Fervus that he is, ran through the trees that were his home, and sang with the animals. At least until Raucous Butterfly scolded him for being happy. You can't be happy and run away from your ancestral lands at the same time. So says Moonwalker Stag. Dancing Flower had forgotten his duties. One of the Warriors of Discord had gotten distracted. Dancing Flower ran over tugged on the brute's massive leg.
"This way brother, the path is not that way," Dancing Flower said this gently, yet insistently. Almost as if talking to a child.
"Flower over there, want flower," the Warrior of Discord said simply,"you flower too?"
"Yes, brother, I'm a Dancing Flower, and the tribe is dancing this way," Dancing Flower tried to drag the Warrior of Discord after him.
"Silly flower, my name not brother," the Warrior of Discord said this next part with a bold, proud voice, "my name Tachus, Disciple of Chaos!"
"Get over here with everybod-" the Cultists' words were cut short as he saw something rustling in the trees behind Tachus.
"BARBARIANS!", Dancing Flower screamed this as loudly as he could before he went bear form and began swarming anything not in touch with it's inner chaos. The column of Cultists and Warriors of Discord found itself surrounded by Barbarians. Barbarians, Rangers, and the occasional Wizard. The Cultists wasted no time in getting their Warrior brothers ready for battle. Not even Moonwalker Stag knew why they were being attacked, but she was always ready to defend her people. With a quick verse of Lupine word, she had every creature in the nearby forest running to fight a battle they knew nothing about. Krolm would not stand in their way. No one would.

Rugin stepped through the underbrush carefully, looking for signs of previous movement through this part of the forest. He had been following what he believed to be the Cultists for some time. As he progreesed, automatically following a vague trail, he reflected upon his meeting with Doran, the Headranger. He had reported his findings, basically nothing, and had been charged with locating these Cultists. It was the Ranger's duty to venture far out from the kingdom, to scout for evil before it was too late. Rugin felt pride knowing his father, and his father's father, had all died in the service of the kingdom. He was third in a family line of Rangers, and his Seeker Bow was an hierloom of the family.A few moments later Rugin stopped suddenly, and strained his ears to listen for the slightest noise... there it was again! A gruesome, depraved, howl. Rugin shuddered at the thought of what it would take to make a noise such as that. He considered turning back and calling it a day. But that wouldn't be right. Besides, now that he looked, it seemed several other people had been travelling behind the Cultists. Rugin bent low over a broken twig and inhaled deeply. Barbarian, unwashed Barbarian, by the smell of it. With a sense of dread Rugin sprang up and dashed ahead! If the Barbarians had chased out the Cultists, they might be planning to attack the knigdom next!

Dancing Flower had camouflaged and was now looking for others of his kind. There were Hellbears everywhere and finding the Cultists was tricky. They all seemed to be gathering around Moonwalker Stag and leaving real Hellbears behind to disguise their true movements. Though peace was the dream of all Cultists, the Chaos of War was no stranger. Oh look, Tachus, he seemed to be doing well. Body parts everywhere, screaming Wizards impaled on his armor. Dancing Flower sidestepped the fireball of the impaled Wizard and rushed to aid Tachus.
"Brother! Come, we are over there, not here!"
Tachus bellowed a reply while still skillfully swinging his blade-stick,"Me not brother, my name Tachus!".
"Tachus! Come here! We need to go!"
"I fighting!"
Dancing Flower could not give a reason for Tachus to leave so long as there were people to fight. So, Dancing Flower fought beside his brother, he bled beside his brother, and he looked out for his brother.
"NOOO!", Dancing Flower bellowed out a bear sized roar of denial as he saw Tachus, Disciple of Chaos clubbed to the ground by three Barbarians and roasted by a Wizard's flames! Dancing Flower reverted to Cultist and tried to call upon Fervus's good will to heal his fallen brother. Tachus stumbled to his feet, his flesh regenerated, his will renewed.
"I'm back!", Tachus maliciously swung at the backs of his foes. They had thought him dead and had already go on to healthier targets.
"No!", Dancing Flower cannot watch over you forever!"
But Tachus was already drawn in by the bloodlust.
"Forgive me brother. We are gone."
Dancing Flower followed after his retreating allies, but stopped after only a few feet.
"Fear not brother, we stand together."
They died together.

The sounds of battle echoed through the woods and had Rugin running even faster towards his destination. He burst out of the undergrowth and ran right into the middle of the fight. His training took over, and long engrained routines replaced concious thought. Animals everywhere, anmals fighting Barbarians. Rugin instintively took aim aganst a Hellbear, but stopped himself. These are the Cultists he was looking for. Rugin turned and sent a stream of arrows into a Barbarian. The brute fell to the ground and Rugin took aim at the next target... Why were Rangers fighting against the Cultists? Rugin didn't recognize their guild badge. They seemed, rugged, less presentable than his guild. Ohh the confusion.
"ACK! Bad Hellbear, I'm your friend, No! Get away!"
The Cultists and their furry allies couldn't tell that Rugin was on their side.
"I'm gone!"
Rugin fled with the grace of the deer and the alacrity of the weasel.

Pretty Boulder and Happy Pond stagered up to Moomwalker Stag, dragging a Barabarian behind them.
Moonwalker Stag saw them and instanly asked,"Why have you taken a prisoner? Crush his skull and hang the the body from a tree!"
"We couldn't do that," Pretty Boulder gave a quick bow to honour the Elder Shaman,"we deserve to know why they attack. He can tell us."
"How did you capture him?"
"He was down and dead, butone of the Vargs kept sniffing at him so I checked and he wasn't dead, just not awake."
"We're not going to make it away from these trees with our lives, the Beast will only slow us down."
"But, we can't give up".
Moonwalker Stag called upon Fervus's might, knowing it was their only hope of survival.
"We won't give up," she said,"we shall hope."
The only sound was that of the fight, and of the rustling leaves of the nearby trees. No wind blew, which could stir their branches.

The Cultists huddled in fear! The mysterious Ranger ran back to whatever guild spawned him, and the Warriors of Discord were annhilating the Barabarians.
Two out of three wasn't bad, thought Loth the Destryoyer, Barbarian Chieftain. There weren't that many Fists of Fervus and everything else was going Krolm's way.
The sight of a horridly mutilated Barbarian flying through the air and crashing into the underbrush gave Loth something to think about.

Bushbark was a tree. Like all trees, Bushbark did not like fire, axes, or having to get up. But, Fervus didn't ask for nothing. Apparently these, Barbarians, were being unfriendly. They had axes so the good/evil association was easy to spot. The Cultists had flowers. They were such friendly little things.
A sound like the wind sawing through the upper canopy flowed over the battlefield,"Awaken my brothers! Ancien roots of quick and core, arise! Fervus demands action, and the axe has returned!"
A wizard foolishly tried to torch Treebark.
"Fire! Stand up and defend yourselves, my fellow grove!"
All around the battleground trees uprooted themselves and revealed archaic faces that have not the seen the sun in an age.
"We hear you Trrebark. Your grove shall fight, for a time."
The tides of war had shifted.

"RETREAT! FALL BACK! RUN!", Loth screamed with the fury of Krolm's Avatar and clubbed his way to freedom. "The trees awake to thwart Krolm! We cannot fight an entire forest."
Most woould consider the Barbarian Chieftain's call for withdrawal a sign of weakness, but this was his strength. Times were changing and Krolm could not afford to lose his followers at this time. A final burst of Rage filled the Barbarians, as well as the heroes fighting alongside them, and they desperately fought to get away from the scores of Daemonwood assaulting them.
"You have not won this war Moonwalker Stag! We shall meet again on the plains of battle, and Fervus will not be able to save you." Loth spoke these final words, knowing they would reach the Elder Shaman, and fled to the North, his people closely following.

"How many died?"
"Forgive us, Moonwalker Stag, we do not have an accurate count," the Cultist who spoke bowed in reverence and could not keep the shame off his face.
"Tell me when you find out, you may go" said Moonwalker Stag. She continued, speaking with another of her tribe,"Do we know how many of Treebark's people are fighting?"
"I can answer that Moonwalker Stag," Treebark came through the trees, which conveniently bent out of his way, and stood before Moonwalker Stag.
"Treebark, I must thank you for your aid. I do not think we would have won that without your efforts."
"It was the least we could do. Fervus is obeyed in this grove."
"Yes, we always saw to that. But I digress, how many of your people fought this day?"
The tree could be heard mumbling to itself as he converted the grove's numbers to something Moonwalker Stag could understand,"Hmm, three hundreds and seven tens and six ones and Treebark."
"Impressive. How long until they return to the earth?"
"We will fight for a time. Hmm, two centuries at least, the Grove will not stop until the axe and the flame are no more."
Moonwalker Stag was already formulating a plan,"Organize your grove Treebark, we move out at dawn."
"Uhm, dawn is good, but organize is not our nature. While we will respect your rule, organization is a thing impossible for the trees. As impossible as good manners for Barbarians"
Moonwalker Stag's laughter filled the ears of her tribe with happiness, she tried to stp long enough to speak,"Yes, I forgot how chaotic nature is, not by choice, but by it's very nature. Sometimes I regret the path my life has taken. But enough of this, at dawn we leave for... we leave at dawn."
Not even Treebark knew why Moonwalker Stag hesitated to reveal their destination.
"I shall, hmm, alert the grove."

The night was cold and dark, with the clouds completely blocking out the stars. Pillars of smoke, barely illuminated by the fires below, rose up into the sky. Sister Darkfiend crept out of the Temple of Krypta and fled into the darkness that shrouded it's walls. Those very walls had posed a problem for quite some time. Sister Darkfiend couldn't get past them, and she wasn't really allowed to leave. That's when she realized what she would have to do. Steal a vampire. Not being powerful enough to control the undead herself, she had to gain control of another Priestess's bloodsucker. No easy thing, especially since the only vampire in the Temple belonged to Sister Bloodcrow. To be caught in the act would be a serious offense. Sister Darkfiend unconciously shuddered at the thought of the danger she had narrowly escaped. She had spent hours preparing the spells and distillations that would perform her task. The materials she had to purchase at the Magic Bazaar left her less than broke. But freedom from Sister Bloodcrow was worth it. That and being with Ranger-what's-his-name. Sister Bloodcrow remembered the fear that gripped her as she approached the Vampire's crypt. It's quarters were adjacent to its master's room. She had performed the ritual with the aid of the spells she had been preparing. Without the added power of the distillations she had prepared she never would have been able rob the creature of its freewill. Didn't vampires only sleep during the day? Maybe this one slept and woke with its master. Regardless, with the foul creature following her and obeying her, Sister Darkfiend had crept towards the walls that made up her prison. With a simple mental command she had the vampire gently pick her up and scale the wall. Its aged and dried flesh sank claws into the slightest gap between the stones and effortlessly carried itself and its new master up then down the walls. Sister Darkfiend commanded the the vampire to wander off into the trees. So here she was now, fleeing her home. No, that wasn't true, her home she had left years ago, it was her prison she left this night. Thoughts of how she, a lone Priestess, was supposed to find a Ranger whose name she couldn't even remember never crossed her mind. She was too busy looking for a graveyard.
