Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for...

Majesty: Heroes of Ardania (Version 1.0 Beta)

http://majestyaa.dingojunction.com/default.asp

It seems a little slow on the server, but otherwise it works. Enjoy - and please place your comments here in the forums.

Once again, many, many thanks to CyberLore for allowing me to continue using their graphics and to everyone here who has given me so much encouragement and support.

I forsee many, many more hours of work going into this game - after the reviews from guys. So step in, start a character and give it a whirl!

I started a Wizard and have set about exploring Valmorgan. After a very interesting conversation with the Royal Advisor (and a very determined Guard) I set off to buy a few healing potions and then inspect the sewers. After finding a rusty hammer (labeled "Useless") and 14 gold, I left the sewers (wishing I'd found a Ratman) and I tried to see if I could sell that piece of junk of a hammer to the blacksmith but that didn't work. ("What! You don't want this quality piece of...well...iron. Or maybe it's steal. Can't tell with all this rust on it. Anyway...") After that, I logged out.

Very interesting Talespinner. I have a 56K and it works really nice on my computer. Can't wait for more of it to get done. I forsee much fun with this.

This appears to be the beginning of what will become an all time favorite for many adventurers of all types.
Jakartiz the warrior quickly made his way to the sewers and immediately encounters the vile vermin we all know and hate so much "Ratman".
Unfortunately without Agrela to help with healing this level 1 warrior is no match for the ratman...My service ends
Perhaps if I had purchased healing potions instead of weapon and armor I may have beaten him, but after another day and several more encounters with the ratmen I am almost assured to stay at level one indefinitely. It seems that the ratmens hp (3 times my own) is a bit much.. and a warrior hasnt much chance of beating this foe alone. Maybe if I could encounter a giant rat enough times to level up a few perhaps then but it will be tough.

Very cool Talespinner, keep up the good work!

Blacksmith wont buy useless junk items, but I have found a place that will...____________ sorry dont want to spoil all the fun

Note to Talespinner: Unknown if this is intended or not, but when I had only one turn left and tried to explore the lower sewer area, I got kicked back to main screen and get this message: no turns left unable to move and I now have 0 turns.?

I, too, have entered Ardania - as Loralty the Monk. After poking around the Marketplace and Blacksmith, I tried to get out with no luck. Then I visited with the Royal Advisor(no, wait, I think I did that in reverse order). Then I popped down to the Sewers, where I fought and slew my first Ratman of the season. After guzzling my healing potions, I discovered the Lower Sweres and explored them. What should I find but a secret exit. Even more surprsing was the City Guard who prevented me from losing it (I really do not envy him his position). Anyway, I went back to the surface and played a round of Sovereign's Wheel, winning my wager of fifty gold. Then I sold a few items I had recovered to the Blacksmith, and headed over to the Fairgrounds. There I was informed that the Sovereign charged an exorbitant registration fee of g2000. Not having that kind of cash, I went back to the Marketplace, bought a RoP and some more potions, and went back to the Sweres, where I got stuck in the slime (i.e., I ran out of turns).
Anyway, pretty good over-all, TaleSpinner. I didn't say anything before, but I like the whole idea and the world so far is fulfilling my expectations.
A few things: Monks can't talk. It occured to me that you might add different speech/replies for each hero, just for diversity, and in the Monk's case because he needs some alternate form of communication (unless, of course, he habitually breaks his vow of silence ).
And a spelling correction: I believe Valmorgen is spelled with an "e" and not an "a". I'm finicky about these things.

I have registered as Elf Eruantalon Bluehair. What's up with Majesty today? I buy Majesty+NE with a discount (I didn't have NE up till now) and then I go to the forums after a loong while (almost a week). And then there's this game. Unfortunately it's not compatible with Netscape (at least 4.6) so, as I don't have the Net at home, I'll have to use an Internet cafe. Instead of learning for the exams. Oh well, whatever, one has to make some hard choices about his values from time to time. Who cares about exams anyway?
Looking forward to this great game, that I unfortunately cannot enjoy... yet.

One question, how long does it take before you get more turns?

Impressive, Talespinner... Most impressive...

After creating a character (a hot-tempered Solarus), I started playing, and was blown away by the details of such a simple online game! It was excellent... I got a good laugh visiting both the Palace and the Gates, and found the shops and sights quite entertaining...

However, I also spotted a few problems and details, which I'd like to point out...

A): Starting without any gear and with few coins is tough, especially when you out of reflex purchase a few Healing Potions, and then realise that you cannot afford armor! Fair enough I thought, the potions will keep me alive...
...but imagine my surprise when I descended into the sewers, and was jumped by a Ratman. Despite carrying four Healing Potions, I got cut down like a child, never even looking at one of them. Which makes them almost completely useless in my opinion (I know, resting at the Temple of Agrela takes time, but it beats spending 25 GP on a potion).

B): The armours are wrong (might be intentional)... Solarii wear chain mail, not leather and scale.

C): Continuing that line of thought, if it is intentional to mix up armour types across classes, then why not weapons too? I have no problem with a Solarus, a warrior by skill, wielding an axe or a sword. Maybe that's just me...

D): The dungeon crawl options seems limited, though I will admit my lack of experience with this kind of game type. If possible, you might want to vary encounters and events, and perhaps add more choices here and there.

E): My character seems awfully weak! I got slaughtered twice by the Ratmen, and barely managed to kill the third that I encountered. I think you will need some kind of 'rookie' dungeon to compliment the sewers, otherwise the Create New Character function will be worn out within hours...

That is all I can come up with right now... Again, it is a game with GREAT potential, and definitely one I will play as often as possible!!

Also, if you ever care for a load of random ideas and suggestions, I am full of them! Just ask...

My second attempt at testing the game is a Priestess. I was impressed with her abilities and the one follower quickly gained a level and became a skeletal warrior. But after an encounter with 6 giant rats it too has died. My concern is that it is noted that new followers will be "cast" during non combat times, and so far after continuing this has not occurred. Do I first have to dismiss this follower for that to happen?
This game is going to be alot of fun just trying out all the different types of heroes. Cant wait to make enough gold to try the fairgrounds.

Thanks to everyone for trying out the Beta version of this game - it makes all the work put in worthwhile

Jakartiz: Hmm.. that useless last turn sounds like a familiar bug. I'll give it a check. And yes, you have to dismiss a dead skeleton follower if you want to reanimate a new one. The reasoning is that some people might not want to get rid of their high-level skeletal follower for a low-level skeleton. However, because the only place you can reanimate your dead skeletal followers is at the Temple to Krypta which isn't in the game yet, I suggest you dump your follower and reanimate a new one.

Falotar: Just checked the spelling with the Prima Guide - yes, it IS Valmorgan on the map. However, in the Histories - the Good King Teevus was refered to as the first of the 'Valmorgens'. I suppose the city is called Valmorgan while the family name is Valmorgen. Either that or someone in Cyberlore stuffed up the spellings Anyway, I like Valmorgan, so I'm leaving it with that. Unless someone can check the Quest map in the actual game and see what the spelling is there.

You know, I somehow knew that you would bring up the fact that Monks don't talk. But anyway, seperate hero dialogue might be a little too tedious to implement, and dialogue like "Bye, gotta go." is much more fun than "Leave Shop". So just pretend that you're 'signing' the dialogue

Sorceror: Sorry about not being able to support Netscape. I know the frustration of only being able to use IE in most sites, I initially tried to build this game to support both browsers, but Microsoft eventually seduced me to the dark side.

Mogor: You get 1 turn every hour. You don't have to re-login or anything - turns will automatically add themselves in when appropriate.

Rogue_Knight: Yeah, Solarii shouldn't use leathers, but the cost of Chainmail would have ensured that new Solarii would never wear any armour till much later - just thought that leather armour might be the generic newbie armour that anyone can buy and use.

Weapons are a different matter though. From my point of view, to use them, you need specialised skills and training, unlike armours.

I agree that the dungeon could do with more options. Don't hesitate to share any ideas you might have - I've got some of my own as well

To everyone else:
Thanks once again for playing. Please don't hesitate to post any ideas you might have right here so that we can talk about it. Or you can email me at 'yhkksu@yahoo.com' and I'll be glad to correspond that way. (That means you, Rogue_Knight )

And yes, the Fairgrounds is really fun. Nothing like beating up other players to make your day

Again Emdra Sunblaze, the valiant Solarus descended into the sewers... and as if to underline my woes with the difficulty I got jumped by TWO Ratmen! Despite my mace, studded leather, and fierce resistance I (predictably) got slaughtered once again... Sigh... Where is the Giant Rats when you need to level up?

Also, I really want that Healing Potion issue addressed!! It is such a central part of the 'mother' game that it seems out of character not to automatically drink them. Either you should drink them when hurt severely (25% of your HP, for instance), or better yet, there should be an option to set when you drink Potions!

By the way, I will begin to spam you... er... I mean mail you later today! You have been warned...

A thought to share here though: How about making the battles turn-based??? Could that be done? I imagine something like:

"You come across a Ratman and it attacks you with great malice!"

Fight
Use an Item
Cast a Spell
Use Ability
Flee

'Fight' will play out the next combat round, while 'Flee' will make your character attempt to escape the encounter (and possibly the dungeon).
'Use an Item' will allow you to drink potions or use magical items (if they are added, which they in my opinion should be). The catch is that your enemy gets a free attack while you are occupied.
'Cast a Spell' and 'Use Ability'... I have no idea how the magic system works, so I am out on a limb here, but it could work like 'Use an Item'... Offensive spells would allow you to strike in the same round, while defensive ones would leave you vulnerable to the foe's next strike.
After each round you get the options again, allowing for some use of tactics during fights. I mean, when the stupid Ratman beats you down to 3 HP, it would be nice to scream, "Darkness has won the day!", and get the hell out of Dodge...

Does this sound stupid/imposible to implement?

Oh, and for the record... The Solarii death-line ought to be, "I am extinguished..."

It's intetesting, couldn't resist using the paladin despite that paladins are female. Used the same name. An interesting thing is that I need 2000 xp to level up. I guess it's to offset good starting stats. I'm only curious about one thing, have you thought of gaining experience the same way as the pc game? I mean gaining xp for each swing hit. It would make the weaker melee characters some xp if they found themselves slaughtered. Although I suppose that would be tedious to implement. Overall, great game:) The lower sections are murder by the way(shudders)
