Does anyone have a list, or can tell me where to find one, of what the spells actually do? Some of them are obvious, I admit, but others - like bless and wither - I can't see that they're actually having an effect when cast.

You can see the effects of bless if you go into the hero panel and click on stats/equipment tabs, likewise for Wither (apart from the speed effect, but that's obvious enough.) A general guide...

Sovereign spells:

Lightning bolt- a little under 20 damage average to one building or character.
Anti-magic shield- +80 magic resistance.
Ligtning storm- 4 lightning bolts to every character in the area of effect (reduced in multiplayer.)

Blessing- +15 dodge/parry, +10 HtH/ranged.
Healing- +100 hp max.

Stoneskin- +6 armour.
Vigilance- +10 dodge/parry/HtH/ranged, +6 damage, increased attack rate and move speed.
Petrify duration halved by resistance check.

Illusory hero- who gives a damn, it's worthless.
Vines duration halved by strength check.

Wither- minus 10 strength, greatly reduced move speed.

Change of Heart- fleeing heroes berserk, everyone else flees.
Frost Field- deals moderate magic damage to all hostile charcters near the target over time.
Chain Lightning- sizable magic damage to primary target, diminishing with each bounce.
Earthquake- up to 75 damage at epicentre.

Paladin-
Shield of Light- +10 dodge/parry/resist, +4 armour.
Destroy undead. AoE damage to undead.

Monk-
Hands of Steel- +10 strength, +25 HtH.
Stoneskin- +8 armour.
Iron will- +55 magic resistance, 7% odds of critical strike.

Healer-
Heal improves with level. Learns destroy undead.
Meditation- +20(?) dodge/parry, improved move speed.
Aura of Peace- Can't be attacked.

Warrior of Discord-
Howl of Discord- damages all nearby foes, causes heroes to flee.
Super Strike- attacks all enemies in melee range at once.

Cultist-
Charm monster.
Camouflage- turns invisible for a time.
Shapeshift- +10 strength, +30 hp(?)

Priestess-
Drain Life- about 10 damage/healing. Improves slowly with level.
Raise dead allows 1 skeleton/level, maximum 3.
Charm undead only works if she's missing a skeleton.

Wizard-
Energy blast- about 15 damage average, improves slowly with level.
Fire shield- +5(?) armour, +20 magic resistance.
Fire blast (at library,) moderate damage to 3 targets, can be combined.
Teleport (long range.)
Fireball- light AoE damage around moderate primary target damage.
Anti-magic shield- +whatever resistance, he's invulnerable to spells by now.
Meteor storm- (at library,) moderate damage to all foes within casting radius for 1/3 of a day.

Solarus-
Sun Scorch- light/moderate magic damage to all nearby foes.
Fire hammer- moderate magic damage to one chosen target.
Supernova- heavy damage to all nearby foes on death.

Adept-
Teleport, Teleport long (great spell.)
Double attack, like it says.

I think that's it. Healing potions +35 hp, rings of protection +10 dodge/parry/resistance, +2 armour.

Or you could get a Prima Guide. It has that stuff in there. And Lightning Bolt does 25 damage, I think (don't have it with me to check).

The lightning bolt does RANDOM damage, choosing from between, oh, around 14, to about 25 damage.

It seems to be random to me, the first one can do a lot or almost none at all, then the second, then the third...
But it's neverthe same for me, even with the same creatures (by the way, I mostly noticed this with Goblins, so I don't think it's magic resist)

AoE? What's that? I know sometimes it refers to the game "Age of Empires", but I don't think that fits here...

No, upon reflection, he might be meaning "Area of Effect". Alfryd just doesn't tend to make mistakes like that, you see, and no, it wouldn't really fit there, especially since some people haven't played HoA and, as such, wouldn't know what he ment.

Ahh! I never knew that's what it did. I always would look in the stats of my hero when they had stoneskin enchanted and didnt see anything, so i never knew what it did. Thanks Very Happy

These are in the expansion. The whole list of the extra spells from the Sorcerer's abode would be:
