Gotta be the Priestesses (of Krypta). Watching a horde of monsters trying to reach a Priestess through her 10 skeletons is just amazing to see. Not to mention that everytime she hits someone, she or her skeletons rejuvenate.

Now if only we could keep the skeletons with the Priestess more often, instead of wandering off in different directions.

Cyberlore, how many skeletons are Priestesses allowed to have? And, is this information going to be in the strat guide? The manual was a little light on the details for my taste, but most strat guides today are little more than the manual rehashed.

I like rogues. No reason in particular. But dwarves come in a close second with their great combat ability and wicked resistance plus they can build and CAN they build! Though their speed blows and I need to use the temple of lunord (AKA temple of ZOOM) extensively but then again adepts are a goodie anyways. So there you have my top three: rogues, dwarves, and adepts.

Elves generate income by visiting Inns/Marketplaces(see the manual).

If you don't use rogues and do use high willpower units (e.g. Monk/Paladin) your units will never visit the elven lounge. As an additional plus (in mp) your opponents low willpower units will visit your lounge sucking money from their taxbases.

If you're feeling lucky and want to win the game *really* *really* early. Build rogues/elves and gamble. An extra 20,000 GP up front is pretty much a game winner (1,000 bet on gold).

If you see a guy building elves on the zone you'll know he's going for the money.

Cheers,
Trev

I have only played the demo but I have to say my favourite hero would be the paladin.
They slay the monsters the honourable way, hand to hand.
On the other hand I really don't like the rangers (or kill stealers as I have come to call them in the demo) as they seem to run away from monsters as mighty as giant rats unless warriors are around.
In the demo I saw a paladin take on two trolls and a minotaur at the same time and emerge victorious!.
Anyway in the full game has anyone seen wild monsters attack each other like they do in the demo? I had a troll do his hyperactive (frenzy?) attack against a ratman once.

Only if the monsters were charmed by Priestess' or cultists.

I just used the Barbarians for the first time, and boy they are awesome!! I built 3 Temples of Krolm, a Ranger Guild, and a Wizard Guild. They make parties like I've never seen before. On multiple occasions I've seen what I now deem a "Barbarian Raiding Party," which is composed of 4 barbarians, 2 rangers, and a wizard. They go around the map destroying everything in their path. I've never had this much carnage since I made a troupe of paladins yesterday, but they weren't nearly as fun as the barbs. Boy this game suprises me again every day!

Oh, and as to their intelligence, I've seen a lot em em buy their Battle Axes and Clubs, along with a ring of teleportation and a ring of protection. Though some armor would be nice to protect against the cold... or even an adamantium loincloth would help.

this is really interesting.
the differences in strategy serve to underline the game's intelligent design.
props to cyberlore again.

as for favorites,
i really do have to go with the cultists.

i haven't seen anything nearly as funny as the first time i watched a bear lumber back into my town and walk up to the blacksmith's only to transform into a small masked man and do a little dance just before entering.

and, because i also love gnomes, i should mention a level three gnome who, after taking out a dragon's den (i'm sure he was no longer level three...) proceeded to buy himself a teleportation amulet and zip all around town...

I would, of course, have to agree with you there, Poocat (what a name!).

I was actually happy to see people arguing about whether or not certain heroes were totally useless or grossly overpowered. It meant that some people had learned strategies regarding those hero types and others hadn't.

Very cool reading indeed!
